Data Management

UK Contact Person: Tony Doyle

GridPP data management effort is primarily based at Glasgow University, in association with the ScotGrid project. We collaborate with or contribute to a number of high energy physics experiments, including ATLAS and CDF, as well as the EU EGEE Project.

Due to our involvement in the full life-cycle of the Data Management products (development, implementation, deployment and support), we have built up significant expertise with data management components.

At present, our team's software development work is currently focussed on Metadata.

Grid Metadata Management

The metadata management work centres on the development of a robust, scalable, secure metadata management system capable of meeting the metadata needs of a wide variety of organisations and groups. Metadata is data which describes other, larger datasets. Examples would be catalogues which keep track of all the millions of data files that a typical HEP experiment will want to analyse, or that log technical and medical data about images in biomedical applications.

The focus of the work is currently to see how the technologies previously developed can be applied to HEP experiments' own metadata products to Grid enable them, providing them with robust Grid service-oriented architectures and high-levels of security.

More detailed information on work and the collaborative working group that has been formed to address metadata issues can be found on the Metadata pages.

Many of the technologies currently built upon were developed with the involvement of GridPP members. More details of data management work carried out during phase 1 of the GridPP project can be found here.
